I sometimes do it with Yosemite OS running LogitechMediaServer and Squeezelite (plus Lame) into a North Star Essensio dac. I use Google Remote Desktop to control it from an iPad (a stylus would be a great help, instead of fat fingers). A program on the iPad lets me SSH into the Mac-mini when I want/need to. Found out how to do it by trial and error, with info off t'internet (who's a clever boy, then ) so I did not find it simple at first, but practice makes almost perfek Ronnie It's a big help to set it up using monitor, mouse and keyboard and then transfer it to where it's going to live after a bit of testing. I bought a cheap Crucial SSD 128gb to run the OS (connected it externally). It flies along, I left the ram at 4gb, music files are on a Qnap Nas (or could go on the internal drive, if I wanted that set up. When I don't use it I run the LMS on a raspberrypi3b+ and use a different dac for the usb output but connect the NorthStar with an Allo Digione spdif co-ax.
Can't say there is any, if much, difference between the two arrangements regarding the SQ. Yes dead simple.
On the mini under 'sharing' tick the 'screen sharing box'. On the iPad install for free VNC. You will now be able to use the IPad as the screen and keyboard/mouse for the mini. You can also use any other device that you own by installing VNC. Note the core code for VNC is open source so is free to use however the paid for versions only add 'features' that we HiFi users don't really need. Best word document program for mac.
I'm new to all this computer music stuff, so bare with me. Did searches and came up with nothing regarding how to control/select/manage the music files on a Mac Mini from an iPad-like device if not using iTunes. My Mac Mini 2.3, i7, 8GB, 2-1TB drives will arrive this week. TIDAL insisted on playing Live at Lollapalooza by the Montreal indie group Stars through my Mac Mini's internal speaker, even though I had specified the Nēo 340's built-in DAC as the playback device in the app's Preferences menu. All other music played correctly; this is one of those go-figure things.
I have been controlling my mini and other devices like this for more than 7 years without any problems. VNC is availble for all o/s and I have it running on Windoze, mac OS X, macOS, and Ubuntu. I use my MacMini headless, with an iPad, running audirvana. It goes out from the Mac to my DAC. I do have a wireless keyboard & mouse and it is hdmi’d to a screen, but the only time I need that is for the initial install & maybe once or twice a year to look at updates, library changes etc. I set the mac to start up audirvana automatically when ever it is powered down/up again.
It’s simple & stable to use. It has to be, as I’m not very good with computers. Audirvana integrates Tidal as well, so my ripped library & my streaming options are all in one app.

I moved from an iPod Touch to an iPad because I am down to one eye and am losing my sight. How to use photoshop for overlapping picture on a picture on mac.
I also have arthritis in both hands. The beauty of an iPad is that you can instantly enlarge whats on the screen just by opening two fingers. Then iOS does not nag for updates and there are no pop ups unlike Mac OS X/macOS and Windoze.
I am just now setting up my Mini for a listening session sitting at my Ubuntu machine in my office two floors up and when I get downstairs I just pick up the iPad and press play and close the cover. Now in the 7 years of using Amarra - well its still as buggy as ever. My guess is that whoever wrote the Amarra engine really knows their stuff but whoever maintains the GUI well nice words completely fail me.
