The is a portable digital DJ controller that connects to your PC via USB, and along with the included Cross DJ software from MixVibes, allows you to load your own music, beatmatch it, blend your own mixes, add scratch effects, and record the whole thing to share with friends or play back at parties later. The Discover DJ isn’t a professional device; meaning you won’t see it in the DJ booth at your favorite club, but you may see it in your favorite house party or amateur DJ’s setup at home. The Discover DJ is clearly aimed at those DJs who are more comfortable recording mixes at home and doing live sets for their friends at a house party than a DJ that’s going to take their gear with them to a club or a large event. That doesn’t make it bad or lacking however, the features you get for the price you pay for the Discover DJ make it a great buy for at-home DJs looking for good bang for their buck. That doesn’t mean it’s without issues though, as we’ll see behind the jump. The Discover DJ will set you back around $99 US list price, although it can be found at online retailers for as low as $69.99.

The Discover DJ ships with a licensed copy of MixVibes’ Cross DJ software, which requires the Discover DJ be plugged in to use. That’s a little of a let-down, since the on-screen controls duplicate much of the physical controls on the Discover DJ, and it would be nice to be able to use Cross without having the Discover DJ attached, for example if you wanted to mix your own tunes on the go without lugging the Discover DJ along. The Discover DJ itself isn’t terribly large: it has two 6-inch jog wheels on either side and basic mixing controls in the center. There’s a cross fader at the bottom and treble/bass/volume EQ controls for each channel. (Sorry DJs, you don’t get a mid-frequency controller or pitch fader per channel.) There’s a master volume control at the top, and a control knob in the center that you can use to browse the music that your load into the Cross DJ software. Vpn antivirus bundle for mac 2017. Push the knob in to activate it and browse songs, and press the A/B load buttons to load that song into the app on the A or B channel. There’s also a “scratch” button, which when on turns the jog wheels into virtual record surfaces that you can pull back on to create scratch effects with the song that’s playing.

Don’t expect the same feel or responsiveness you’d get with actual vinyl on a turntable though; if you pull the wheels back and let them fly, you only get a momentary scratch and the song begins to play forward again. You have to keep your hand on the jog wheel to prolong the effect. The scratch effect is also all digital, so don’t expect it to hear the nuances in sound as you move your hand around the wheel at different speeds. The jog wheels are incredibly touch-sensitive, and I found myself accidentally stopping or scratching tracks when my finders were on the volume control knobs for each channel and the side of my hand accidentally brushed the wheels. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but if you’re not careful you’ll wind up pausing playback or missing a phrase or beat while you’re otherwise occupied trying to keep your mix clean.

When the scratch button is off, the jog wheels control the pitch of the song playing on that channel, which renders the pitch control buttons next to the jog wheels redundant, but you’ll likely use the Discover DJ with the jog wheels in scratch mode anyway. The Sync buttons on each channel automatically beatmatch the song on that channel with the song on the other channel. For example, if I’m playing a track on channel A that’s 130 beats/minute (BPM) and cue up another song on channel B, pressing the Sync button will automatically force that song to play back at 130 BPM.
