It's the top grossing app store so developers are not going to ignore it, and this unified app store will allow companies to develop one app to reach the entire hardware lineup, because it basically adds the mac users to the already high number of iOS users. • It encourages developers to use native APIs, and build feature rich applications, because the native API's are easy to port, and this reduces the work they have to do (since porting will only work well with native APIs if you follow apple's best practices).

Eventually shortcuts will go cross platform - since the code base is all the same, you could ask your iPhone to perform some actions on the mac, then open that file on the iPad, and start drawing on it. You could even combine shortcuts with handoff and continuity, building up siri the way you want to use it. While siri on the mac feels pointless right now it won't be in the future. • Unification of feature sets across the hardware lineup - Once all the underlying code is basically the same, and well optimized, you'll get the same great experience no matter what apple device you use, which means that everyone can pick the devices that best fit their use case, and not worry about losing features. So, if you don't need a mac, and want an iPad, you aren't missing apps. If you don't want an iPhone or iPad, but want a mac, you dont lose out on some of those features.
